Pfizer and its blockbuster drug Viagra have agreed to co-promote a drug for erectile dysfunction, Pfizer announced in a news release Tuesday.
The company, which is developing a drug to help men with impotence, is seeking approval for the drug, which will be available through the New York-based company's New York office.
In a separate announcement Tuesday, Pfizer said the company has received approval for Viagra, the brand-name drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, for use in conjunction with counseling and psychotherapy.
The company is also seeking approval to buy a 60-milligram pill of Pfizer's erectile dysfunction drug, which will be sold at a discount to a month's supply by the company. The company will also receive a $3 million special fund for research and development.
The drugs are in Phase III trials, the company said, and are expected to launch in the fourth quarter of 2007. The New York-based company is developing a drug to help men who have impotence who do not have an ability to get or maintain an erection that is strong enough to have sexual intercourse.
In a statement, Pfizer said it is "reviewing the potential benefits and potential risks" of the drugs and will update patients and healthcare providers promptly.
Pfizer's decision comes as a major blow to its global business. Pfizer acquired the pharmaceutical company's research and development (R& D) unit in 1998. It announced Tuesday that it would seek approval to develop a generic version of Viagra, which is expected to cost roughly $1.50 a pill. The company is also looking into the possibility of a new drug for the treatment of a rare inherited condition known as PDE5-inhibitor-type disorders.
A Pfizer spokesman declined to say what the company is doing about the drugs. In a statement, Pfizer said that the company was "reviewing the potential benefits and potential risks" of the drugs and that it "will update patients and healthcare providers promptly."
Pfizer also is looking into the possibility of a new drug for a disorder known as PDE5-inhibitor-type disorders, or PEDs. An FDA-approved drug for that condition, which affects blood flow to the penis and the genitals, is known as PDE5-inhibitor-type drugs.
The FDA approved Viagra in 1998 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and Cialis in 2003 for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition that can affect men of all ages.
The drugs have been approved to treat impotence, and Pfizer has said that the company is also looking into the possibility of a new drug for the treatment of PEDs.
Pfizer also said that it is taking an interest in an important aspect of its research and development, such as development of a drug to treat the disorder that affects millions of men worldwide. Pfizer has also been focused on developing a drug that will treat anemia, high blood pressure, and some types of cancer, such as cancer of the prostate.
Pfizer said the New York-based company will continue to work with a partner in the drug development program and will take all reasonable steps to obtain FDA approval.
In a separate announcement, Pfizer said it had received approval for a treatment for a rare form of pulmonary arterial hypertension, also known as PAH, that affects men between 40 and 70.

“Erectile dysfunction can be a debilitating condition, so it’s important men feel they have fast access to quality and legitimate care, and do not feel they need to turn to counterfeit online supplies which could have potentially serious side effects.”
Dr Berkeley Phillips, UK medical director at Pfizer, said: “The availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies from next year will offer men who are eligible for the product a new and convenient way to access sildenafil, a commonly prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction.
“We understand some men may avoid seeking support and treatment for this condition, so we believe giving them the option to talk to a pharmacist and buy Viagra Connect could be a real step forward in encouraging more men into the healthcare system.
“As erectile dysfunction may be a sign of an underlying condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, there could also be a wider benefit to public health in the long term.
